Technology Centre welcomes Captain Jess Heathcote back from Afghanistan

Technology Centre team member, Jessica Heathcote has just returned from serving a six month tour with the Royal Engineers in Afghanistan. Jess was promoted to the rank of Captain just before leaving the UK.

As part of the Territorial Army element of 170 (Infrastructure Support) Engineer Group, Jess was given the chance to mobilise in support of the Regular Works Group deploying to Afghanistan in May 2011. Jess was the Staff Officer (level 3) (SO3) (Infrastructure) with the Helmand Provincial Reconstruction Team (HPRT) Specialist Team Royal Engineers (STRE).

The HPRT STRE delivers infrastructure across Helmand Province funded by International Development funding. As SO3 (Infrastructure), Jess was the STRE representative within the HPRT, providing a link to the STRE and other organisations and providing engineering advice to the client.

A major part of the work was mentoring and developing the Afghan Line Ministries and Contractors in infrastructure delivery and management. Jess was able to employ expertise gained whilst working with VINCI Construction UK.

Jess , who works in the Nuclear Services & Building Pathology team said,

“It was an amazing experience working on projects that had every issue that can be imagined. Hopefully work back in the UK will be less complicated!”
